Purpose

The purpose of this page is collect lessons on the use of the dictionary as taught in the media center.   Georgia Performance Standards ELA2R4 The student uses a variety of strategies to gain meaning from grade-level text. The student q. Uses dictionary, thesaurus, and glossary skills to determine word meanings. ELA2W1 The student demonstrates competency in the writing process. The student v. Uses the dictionary and thesaurus to support word choices.   AASL Standards for the 21-Century Learner 1. Inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge. 2. Draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge. 3. Share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society. 4.Pursue personal and aesthetic growth   Lesson One - Introduce the Dictionary 1. Today we will be watching a video about how to use the dictionary. As we watch the video, listen for some of these ideas listed on the Anticipation Guide. Decide if the statement is true or false. When we finish the video we will go over the Anticipation Guide to see if you have the correct answer. If you mark and anwer as false, you must be able to tell us why it is false - what will make it true. 2. Go over the Anticipaton Guide with students making sure they understand how to use the guide. 3. Show the video All About the Dictionary. 4. Go over the Anticipation Guide (Answers). 5. Explain the Guide Word Activity. Half of the students will begin checking out books while the other half will begin working on the activity. Click here for the answers!
